What is Nucleoplasty in Cervical Hernia?

What is Nucleoplasty in Cervical Hernia?

Cervical hernia is a health issue caused by damage or displacement of the discs located between the vertebrae, leading to pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, resulting in pain, numbness, and limited mobility. This condition can negatively impact the patient’s daily quality of life. While traditional surgical methods are an option for hernia treatment, there are also less invasive alternatives available. One of these treatment options, nucleoplasty, is a modern, non-surgical method used to treat cervical hernia.

Nucleoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at reducing the gel-like substance (nucleus pulposus) within the herniated disc. This method decreases the pressure inside the disc, relieving pressure on the nerve roots. During the procedure, a very thin needle is inserted into the disc under local anesthesia, and radiofrequency waves are used to vaporize the material inside the disc. This reduces the disc’s volume and alleviates the pressure caused by the hernia.

One of the main advantages of nucleoplasty is that, being a minimally invasive method, it allows patients to recover quickly. The procedure typically lasts 30-60 minutes, and patients can return home the same day. Although mild discomfort may be felt after the procedure, this usually subsides within a few days. Nucleoplasty is considered a low-risk procedure with minimal tissue damage.

This treatment method is especially suitable for patients who have not benefited from conservative treatments (such as physical therapy, medications, injections) and are seeking an alternative to surgery. However, the effectiveness of nucleoplasty depends on the size of the hernia and the condition of the disc structure. Nucleoplasty may not be suitable for patients with advanced degenerative disc disease or very large hernias.

Nucleoplasty for cervical hernia offers an effective option to relieve pain and improve quality of life without the need for surgery. However, as with any medical procedure, the decision for nucleoplasty should be made by a specialist after a comprehensive evaluation of the patient. In suitable patients, nucleoplasty is a promising treatment option with a quick recovery time and low risk profile.
